We asked MadeOn readers whether they thought their man should sport a beard or not.
Here’s what they said:
22% of men prefer to keep their face clean-shaven.
36% of women agree.
That means that a whole lot of men and women do like the beard look…. and 400 people had some pretty strong opinions.
Here are their grooming tips. First, the men:
use a beard comb
keep it nicely trimmed
my wife trims my mustache with small scissors, and I use a trimmer on goatee
beard balm
wash with dandruff shampoo
just use shea butter
natural beard oil
shaping wax
do nothing – let it be
But oh, my… the ladies. I cracked up with some of the answers:
Regardless of how you wear it, keep it groomed. No wild hairs going in all directions.
Don’t be so fastidious, I like the stubble from time to time!
Keep it trimmed and tidy, no scruffy look please. Mustache wax is a must
Be careful with the in-between stages that can be extra abrasive to snuggle up against. For instance, sometimes after my Hubba Hubba trims his goatee, it is rather prickly to kiss him for a day or so.
Keep it neat, if you must grow chin hair; and dontcha dare let your sideburns get any higher than your earlobes. (Sideburns are just so sexy.)
For Sculpting: When it comes to grooming, I have to go to the guys who have their own opinions. Meet Joshua Sheats, producer of the show Radical Personal Finance. Joshua borrowed his wife’s Beesilk bar and found that it works better than the expensive beard oils he was used to (watch his tutorial below).
For Styling: You want the benefits of a beard oil, but you need some added wax to tame the flyaway hair. If you’re not up for making it yourself, go for the Second Life Hair Butter. It’s a great conditioner that doesn’t go on as heavy as the Beesilk bar, but adds some shine and style (with a very light orange-y scent).

Kassia, via Facebook: My husband decided to grow a beard about a year and a half ago. I wasn’t sure how it would look but I really like it! He takes very good care of it, using beard conditioners and keeping it trimmed, and he gets compliments on it all the time.
