This post on homemade foundation was originally posted in September 2016, with updates posted December 27th, 2016. The resource referenced was part of the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle, a MadeOn-sponsored bundle of resources focused on health, nutrition, and skin care.
I flipped through Kinda Crunchy: 31 Day Challenge to Frugal Natural Living by Tiffany Terczak and skipped straight to Day 24, entitled MAKE-UP. (If you’re reading this on December 27th or 28th, get the book as part of the Ultimate Healthy Living Bundle here.) Knowing that my readers wanted DIY make-up tutorials, this interested me the most.
Technically, I could make and sell cosmetics (though could you imagine all the skin types and colors I’d need to accommodate!?), and we do have a small line of tinted lip balm (click here to view). But, as a business, I’m legally limited in the types of ingredients we’re allowed to use as colorants. I can’t use cocoa powder, for example.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t make your own at home… from ingredients in your kitchen!
Tiffany from Don’t Waste the Crumbs is allowing me to share her homemade powdered foundation, below.
If you want more recipes from her, you’ll also find her homemade tinted moisturizer recipe in the e-book that’s part of the bundle. (The recipe below costs less than 50 cents to make, and makes enough to last about a month.)
Homemade Powdered Foundation
Supplies
- 2 Tbsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp bentonite clay
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp cocoa powder
- 1/4 – 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- pinch – 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- pinch – 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- pinch – 1/4 tsp ground sage
- 10 drops nourishing oil (jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or vitamin E oil) or lavender essential oil
- 5 drops tea tree oil (optional)
Method
In a small glass bowl, measure out arrowroot or cornstarch. Add 1/4 tsp of cocoa powder and 1/4 tsp of nutmeg. Mix well with a whisk.
Add remaining ingredients, 1/8 tsp at at time, depending on your skin tone, whisking well after each addition. Test the color by dipping your foundation brush into the bowl and brushing on your face. Adjust the color as needed.
When you’ve found your perfect color combination, add 10 drops of lavender oil and whisk well. If you would like additional moisture, add the optional tea tree oil and whisk well. Scoop powder into your final container and store closed.
