How to Wrap and Package your DIY Lotion Bars {what MadeOn readers did}
Bath Salts, Lotion Bars, and Lip Balms
From Myra: I used some of the recipes from the DIY recipe cards. I made chocolate mint lotion bars and lip balm using coconut oil, beeswax, and cocoa butter and adding peppermint essential oils. I even had some Christmas tree shaped molds to use! I made the lavender bath salts and put them in Mason jars. I made gift sets of baths salts, lotion, and lip balm for teacher/therapist gifts, as well as for some white elephant gift exchanges. Everyone has been so intrigued by the idea of a lotion bar! It was very simple to do, and the kids even had fun scooping out the Epsom salts. I think I spent longer trying to make pretty labels than actually making the products!
Made by Julie: I made lotion bars in mini-muffin tins and used your gift tags. I used parchment paper for wrapping.
How to make Lotion Bars with small children around…
Tomoe: I made 15 small hard lotion bars for the first time!!!! Yay! And surprisingly it was so easy. I watched the video on your website a few weeks ago, so I have some idea of what I was getting into. But can it be this easy??? I had about 40 min until dinner. I got my two kids (2 and 4 yr old) a few pieces of paper and lots of Christmas stickers. Then I got on my project. I never dealt with beeswax before, and it took longer than expected to melt the beeswax. But once it melted, I exclaimed, “I can’t help you guys right now.” And I quickly filled up 15 cupcake cups. And while I was busy helping my little one, it was already hard!!! Wow. I hope you can feel my excitement from my email!
I wrapped each one with jumbo baking cup and sealed it with Christmas stickers that I bought for my kids ;-). And put it in a clear bag and put the tag you generously provided and tied it with red and white twine. I’m so proud of myself!!! i can’t thank you enough, Renee! I probably didn’t go with this route if I didn’t have this all! So THANK YOU!
Whipped Body Butter Makes a Great Fundraiser Project
Meanwhile, Susan’s family created whipped body butter to sell as a fundraiser to raise money for refugees in Turkey. Here’s what her family did: We live in Turkey where large numbers of refugees have been passing through for years. As you know, the numbers have dramatically increased over the past year. So, I decided to make some Peppermint Cocoa Body Mousse to sell at a fall festival that was held here, in order to raise money for the refugees to help buy gas for heating this winter. I added some peppermint essential oil to the recipe, because at this time of year, who doesn’t like chocolate & peppermint? 😀 My children designed a logo, came up with a slogan & poster, and helped make & package the body mousse along with some yummy pumpkin treats. My daughter totally thrived as the sales associate at our festival table & was more than happy to share why we were raising money.
Silicon ice cube trays make great hard lotion molds
Kerry: Thought I’d shoot you a photo of my first Hard Lotion! The silicon bottomed oversized ice cube trays from Wal-Mart worked great. I had a silicon star tray from a soap making kit & that also worked great! Still haven’t figured out the packaging yet, but will send pix if that comes out cute. 😉 All of these were made using the recipe for 1 batch. Plus it made the 4 lip balms as well.
Here are what other MadeOn readers did with their DIY projects this year:
Joyce: I just have to tell you that since I started making the hard lotion I can’t keep it on hand. I gave it to my co-workers last year for Christmas, made two batches with my daughter for her to give as gifts this year and we just love it and so do those we give it to.
We added essential oils (lavender or frankincense) occasionally if the lotion is made for a specific purpose. I make aromatherapy for roller balls, sprays and diffusers so we don’t always add oils to the lotion. We have used molds for shapes and I’ve purchased small tins but our favorite of all are 1 oz or.75 oz deodorant tubes. I tried multiple ways but the small tubes are the easiest for application, travel well and stay clean and free from dust. Some of the ways we use the lotion are chap stick (I use the lip gloss tubes and have refilled the Eos balls), chapped hands, soften scars, face lotion on dry spots, make-up remover, soften rough heels. It helps eczema and psoriasis and I’ve even used it on an itchy rash on my shoulder and in two days it was gone. It is seriously our “go to” lotion when we need some help with our skin. I know my daughter has used it on her dog as well. We are completely sold! 😉
Janelle: We made lotion bars for my kids’ teachers at church, and some friends as well. They were so easy! I think they turned out great and are such a unique gift! I gave one to an Amish friend (who makes everything from scratch) and she was so impressed I made them! 🙂 thanks for the encouragement and tools to make these this Christmas!
Kelly: I made hard lotion and bath fizzies for gifts this year. The hard lotion is so economical for gifts! Cost about 5 bucks a person after packaging it all and adding labels.
Julie: I made your hard lotion bars but I didn’t have any molds, but I did have a silicone ice cube tray. So I made square cubes and I bought little containers from the dollar store to put them in. I also used dollar store parchment paper as I thought since it was cheaper, it would also be thinner and I was right! I also made the lip balm and I used peppermint and orange essential oils. I gave all my co-workers one of each today as Christmas gifts and every one is raving about them! Thank you so much for those recipes! I love making gifts for everyone and this was something different! I work in a cemetery in Ohio so everyone here is exposed to extreme weather conditions so this was a perfect gift!
