5 Skin Care Essentials to Bring When Camping

Renee HarrisJuly 17, 2017

Our family went camping over the weekend at a remote campground near Almanor, California called Hole in the Ground.

A few of my favorite memories: meeting new young campers who quickly befriended my 6 and 8-year-old kids, catching up with friends and family who joined us, and watching my daughter operate an old pump that drew water for washing and cleaning.

My 5 Top Skin Care Choices

1. Double-duty Lotion & Repellent: Our Bug Block works perfectly well as a lotion, and the scent is a lovely complement to the smells around you: cedarwood, rosemary, and citronella.

2. Lip Balm: I was surprised at how fast my lips dried out, even at a 4500-foot altitude. While most people don’t leave home without it, make sure it’s packed, or use your Beesilk bar as a backup. Choose your favorite variety.

3. Simply Soothing Rash Cream: If one of your campers is a baby, diaper changes may not happen as often as when you’re at home. But even without a baby, this rash stick can double as a very light sun protection stick.

4. Lavender Roll-on: The water coming from the nearby creek was freezing, so I didn’t bathe over the weekend. The Lavender Roll-on came to my rescue as a perfume stick, as well as a backup bite relief oil.

5. Shampoo Bar/Soap: Bonus points if it has a lovely scent. Our shampoo bars come in small guest size bars, only available in our Travel Box.

This water well pump involved a lot of hand-cranking but for a campground that requires you to bring in your own water, we didn’t mind the chore too much.

Hair Care Tip: Pictured here is my shampoo bar. The trip was too short to actually bother washing my hair, but if I did, I’d use the same bar as a regular soap bar in addition to a shampoo bar.

Or, I’d use a homemade dry shampoo. For me, it’s simply cornstarch and a pastry brush to brush it on with.
